On establishment of international association «Brotherhood of Allied convoys» in Reykjavik
On August 15, 2018 a wreath laying ceremony to the memorial «Hope» (Russian sculptor V.Surovtsev) was held at the Fossvogur Cemetery. The monument was erected in memory of participants of the Arctic convoys from different countries. Russian Ambassador to Iceland Anton Vasiliev and President of Iceland G.Th.Johannesson addressed the gathering. On August 16, 2018 the Russian Embassy in Iceland hosted international conference.
Speakers included veterans of the Arctic convoys Taras Goncharenko (Russia) and Jack Patterson (Great Britain), relatives and descendants of the convoy veterans from Russia, Iceland, the United States, Great Britain, historians, representatives of local academic circles and media. As a result international public association «Brotherhood of Allied convoys» was established. Among the aims of the association are to unite veteran organizations, museums, educational centers and preserve historical memory about the Second World War.
